sports in room 4

House Tug of War!
The Annual house 'tug of War' saw Waimea take the glory and overall points. Van Diemen were victorious in the Senior category and teachers were too overwhelming against the children.

Another fun afternoon, and example of friendly competition at its finest!

Summer Sports
Summer Sports is back and the senior syndicate have been testing their throwing, jumping, running and sprinting in a series of testing events over the next few months.

This term we are looking to challenge ourselves, and with continued practice hope to beat our personal bests. We are also looking to learn techniques, video our performance and challenge how to improve. It all feeds forward to the school games on November 24th.

Cricket in Schools
Dan from Tasman cricket came to teach Room 4 some cricketing basics: Batting, fielding, catching and bowling. A great attitude matched by a superb display of technique and talent from Room 4.

Hira Football Tournament
HSS sent three competitive teams to the Hira Schools Football tournament. Milky blue skies and the sun-kissed turf of Saxton arena was the venue for the inter-schools tournament, involving over 40 teams across the region. The HSS representatives did not disappoint.

Outstanding displays from HSS Red Devils and HSS Phoenix placed them high in the group stage after 6 games, and confidently put them through to the Quarter-finals where they were eventually defeated by Brightwater and Henley respectively. The HSS Gunners were in fine form, only dropping points in a tense 0-0 tie with Central. There strong momentum continued and fired them into the competition semi-finals, having scored 18 and conceding 0. Unfortunately, HSS Gunners conceded their only goal of the tournament and ended up losing to eventual winners, Richmond in the semi-finals.

Many had not played competitive football before, so was great to see so many positive performances and smiling faces. An outstanding representation of Hampden Street spirit, sportsmanship and tenacity in a competitive environment. We then cooled off in the sprinklers to mark off an amazing day.

Winter Sports Tournament

Winter Sports and Jump Rope for Heart from Mr Skiperoo on Vimeo.
Another Sports packed week at HSS saw the climax of our winter sports program, finals of South Island Skiing and 'Jump Rope for Heart' on Friday! A thoroughly exhausting week, but as ever, Hampden Street students stepped up to the plate, packed a positive attitude, poured themselves a cup of ambition and let the games commence!
The winter sports program has involved a dedicated focus to one specific sport for 8 weeks, with the culmination competing against regional teams in this chosen sport. Children were encouraged to choose a sport that they didn't naturally already play, or one that they felt required some element of development. The seniors were given the option of Table Tennis, Volleyball, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Rugby or Football.
It was great to see so many children opting for a totally alien sport to their natural choice. Many children opting to leave their comfort zones, take risks and challenge their character. Seven weeks of skill sessions and game related play meant the HSS students were ready for the inter schools competition against Nelson's finest.
HSS did not disappoint. A fantastic display, in competitive challenge, sportsmanship and overall attitude to one another made all the teachers proud. A big thankyou to all those parent volunteers that made this all possible, and the HSS kids for another exemplary display amongst the wider community.

Skipping
Football
'Jump Rope for Heart' was set up by the Heart Foundation to encourage kiwi kids into physical activity that is fun, rewarding and physically demanding. A gold coin donation is suggested, but any contribution is valued by such a worthwhile charity.
Mr Marston is renowned for being the most inept skipper amongst the HSS staff. Despite strengths in other areas of physical activity, timing and rhythm are not at the forefront of his abilities. Therefore Room 4 have been trying for weeks to teach and develop is skills form complete beginner to satisfactory, and thankfully they've succeeded!
A real credit to Room 4 with all their efforts to skipping and the winter sports program. We've really worked together to encourage one another and seek alternative methods if one route becomes too challenging. But overall, we've worked together to climb obstacles in our way, not given up, and succeeded with a big cheesy grin to show at the end. Well done Room 4!!

Skiing

Last Thursday, year 5 had a marvellous day on the slopes at Rainbow, near St Arnaud. The weather was perfect; milky blue skies, with whispers of cloud cover and crisp white snow conditions.

All the children attempted skiing lessons on mixed ability. The majority of children pushing themselves, to make some excellent progress.

A big thankyou to all those parents that volunteered their services, as drivers and supporting the children in their learning. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day with no injuries to report; just some incredibly happy exhausted faces!

Football

Room 4 were lucky enough to experience the footballing expertise of Nelson Bays development officer - George Campbell. We have been working on balance, spatial awareness, types of movement, dribbling and passing. I was amazed how many 'Soccer-stars' we have in Room 4! Listening attentively, being prepared to take risks, and supporting one another throughout all the footballing workshops!
The Beep test: The Senior Syndicate rise to the challenge!

Cross Country

On Wednesday, the Senior syndicate took to Fairfield Park to embark on a tough 2.5km circuit. The challenging course involved tough uphills, winding bends, slippery grass and a lot of positive spirits! It was an amazing spectacle to see so many seniors cheering on their peers, and lots of smiles throughout a cold, brisk nelson afternoon. The Seniors have been following a weekly cross-country training regime, supporting their own individual goals for the whole of term 2. It's been a remarkable success seeing everyone complete the race with smiles on their faces and supported by their classmates.
