Book Club


In Room 4, we have been discovering the mystery and adventure behind ancient myths and legends. Each week we focus on myths from a different location, beginning with traditional Maori tales. We discover the courage and bravery of Greek legends such as Theseus, Perseus and Hercules in defeating such monstrous beings like Medusa, the Minotaur and the Hydra (possessing 8 serpents heads!).



Each week we delve into a different region, looking at Viking adventures, Egyptian tales, Native Indian legends, West African mysteries, and even as far as Japanese and Chinese folk law.

We will then culminate our discovery in looking at modern day myths: The impact of the Rosetta Stone and rumours that surround the Egyptian curse. 
 

Mystery Stories

In Room 4, we have been acting detectives and exploring Mystery Stories. We have varied examples trying to identify the key features of the text to solve the crime. We have identified each story needs:


- A Crime or event
- Clues or traces of evidence
- Possible suspects and their suggested motives
- Character statements and alibis
- A solution

Already, we have attempted to resolve:
The Puzzling Pie Contest
The case of of the ruined Roses
The Ghost Impersonator
The Haunted Primary school

It's been a fantastic response from all the children, with some very creative and inventive thoughts on character motives.


Book Club: Vibrant Vocabulary

Book club gives the senior syndicate children the opportunity to explore different areas of reading, comprehension and text. Throughout book club in the first few weeks of the term, the teachers have been leading workshops looking at comprehension and exposing the children to different types of literature. 

In room 4, we have been looking at Vibrant vocabulary. We have looked at books from various authors and explored how they use the language to create mood, humour, description and atmosphere. 






We have discovered the importance of using ambitious vocabulary, and looked at examples of synonyms and antonyms.
